The Hawk

While we all wait for Mike to finish that blog about his new job, here is something to make you giggle. This is an email my mom sent to me the other day.

Hey,
So, I left work early yesterday to take Smokey for a nice long walk. Sort of a gift from me to her. She used to love doing that and I thought it would pick up her spirits. So, we go outside. At the same time, the neighbor girl (across the street) takes out her dog. It's the little benji-looking dog. Smokey and this dog are buds. Smokey likes to bark at him now...just to say hello. (She used to run across the street to sniff him, but now she just barks from afar.)
Anyway, we both started walking the dogs. She was on one side of the street, and I was on the other. Even though we were across the street from each other, the dogs were barking to each other and we were talking about the weather and about how Smokey has been feeling.
Well, from out of nowhere I feel a swoosh above my head...which actually made me duck. Then I saw the hawk swoop down on top of that little dog. The neighbor girl screamed and yanked the leash. I let go of Smokey and ran across the road, waving my arms and yelling as loud as I could. The hawk let go and flew to the roof of a house. He sat there, glaring at me and squawking as loud as I have ever heard a bird. I asked the girl if her dog was okay and she said "yes," so I told her to run to their house. I ran back to Smokey and we went as quickly as we could to our house...all the while I am keeping my eye on that stupid bird. He just kept screaming at me. Once inside the house, he flew to our backyard and perched for quite some time.
Can you believe that a hawk would go after a dog, with people all around?! Chuck didn't think anything of it, but I think that's weird for a bird to be that bold and aggressive....especially when there are other little critters he could eat. So, I made Chuck promise to keep better tabs on Smokey when she's out and to make sure that Tasker doesn't escape. Chuck said the hawk couldn't get Smokey but that Tasker would be a gonner!!! I know he couldn't lift Smokey, but I wouldn't put it past him to peck at her or to scratch her or something. He was downright mean!!!
So that's my story for you today!
